Note: This information has been collated from many sources; Mainly from the in game trade books and various postings on the internet. I have verified all the raw silk armor and the cured silk armor recipes. Others have verified the Fighting Glove recipe. Please feel free to email me (madwand@home.com) if any errors or omissions are found. As well, the full text of the trade book "Vol 3 of the Chronicles of Wu" has been posted here.

1.0 Introduction

Two patches ago, Verant added the ability for tailors to make new armor from silk. There are two new types of armor that players may make. Raw Silk Armor is comparable to Damask as it has 1 AC more then cloth yet weighs only 0.4 WT. It is wearable by Monks, Enchanters, Wizards, Necromancers, and Magicians of all races. Cured Silk Armor is wearable by Monks only, but it has an even higher AC and weighs only 0.1 WT! As well, during a recent patch, two new enchanter spells were added that produce potions that can be included in the making of silk armor, giving it magical properties. The only magical piece of armor made so far from silk are "Wu's Fighting Gauntlets".

With these changes to Tailoring, Verant has breathed new life into a skill many have abandoned. No longer will tailors have to spend massive amounts of plat and time creating studded leather armor just so they can advance up into the higher levels of the skill. With silk, the tailor can now work into the 30's range just with raw silk armor, and into the 70's range with cured silk armor, making it possible to by-pass studded leather armor completely and go direct to the hardest armor a tailor can attempt, reinforced leather armor!

2.0 Raw Silk Armor

The process to make this new armor is straightforward and simple. Like patchwork, the components are the raw material and a pattern combined in a sewing kit. In the case of Raw Silk Armor, the material needed is a Silk Swatch. Silk swatches can be made by combining two spider silks in a sewing sit. These have to be straight , non-stackable spider silks, not spiderling silks. It should also be noted that making silk swatches never fails and will provide a sure and easy way to gain skill in tailoring to level 15, at which time it becomes trivial.

An easy source of silk for the novice tailor who is also a novice player, is large spiders. These common arachnids can be found in almost any newbie zone, and are easy to kill for the level 3 to 7 player, providing experience while being harvested for their precious extrusions. One silk swatch is all that is needed for all pieces except the robe and the pants, which each require two swatches.

The following is a detailed breakdown of each piece of raw silk armor.

3.0 Cured Silk Armor

Cured Silk Armor is harder to make as it involves an extra element to the recipe - Heady Kiola, which is used to "cure" the silk. Heady Kiola is a brew that is made from combining 2 Kiola Saps (They look like little leather packets on the Brew Master NPC merchants) with 1 water (not summoned) and 1 bottle.

Because there is now 3 or more elements, a Large Sewing Kit will be needed to make Cured Silk.

The following is a detailed breakdown of each piece of cured silk armor.
(Note: All Cured Silk Armor is Race: Human & Class: Monk only)

Cured Silk Gi: AC 8 Wt. 0.1
3 Silk Swatches + 2 Heady Kiola + 1 Tunic Pattern
Cured Silk Sandals: AC 4 Wt. 0.1
1 Silk Swatch + 2 Heady Kiola + 1 Boot Pattern

4.0 Magic Silk Armor

With the latest patch, Enchanters have the ability to make potions that are to be used in the process of making silk armor. These spells are Thicken Mana (level 12 - 200 mana - makes potion of Viscious Mana) and Crystallize Mana (level 20 - 400 mana - makes potion of Cloudy Mana). Thicken Mana uses a Pearl and a Poison Vial as components, while Crystallize Mana uses a Peridot, an Emerald and a Poison Vial. Because of these components, making magic silk armor is not going to be cheap, as just the potions will be in the range of 20 - 40pp each, and you do not get them back when you fail in your tailoring attempt.

So far, there are only two places for an enchanter to buy these spells... Thicken mana can be bought from the NPC merchant on Boog Mudtoe's Island in the Ocean of Tears, but for some reason it is called "Purify Mana" there, even though the spell scribes into your spell book as "Thicken Mana". The other place to buy this spell is from a Brownie merchant in the Brownie village of Lesser Faydark. There you can buy both Thicken Mana and Crystallize Mana. Now, as many are aware, those little brownies are very strong and very unfriendly to most people in the game, so being able to approach them, let alone buy anything from them is a bit of a challenge. Here is one way I have heard that works for enchanters...

(A) First cast Alliance or Benevolence on the brownies, to be able to approach them. Make sure you are constantly con'ing them at each step!
(B) Second, if they are still dubious to you, and will not sell, try approaching the merchant and then casting Minor Illusion on yourself to make you into a lamp post or some other inanimate object.
(C) This should make them indifferant to you, so now you can buy the spell and high tail it out of there!

As of now, the only item that is mentioned as being possible to make magical is the gloves. Vol 3 of the Chronicles of Wu states that by combining an enchanter's mana potion with a greater lightstone in the making of silk gloves, you will get a pair of magical gloves, able to attack monsters that are impervious to physical assault, as well as providing a lightsource for the wearer. Someone has finally succeeded in making these gloves and the recipe and picture of them follows. It should be noted that these gauntlets will be quite pricey due to the cost of the Viscious Mana, and the rising cost of GLS's.

Wu's Fighting Gauntlets AC 4 Wt. 0.1
1 Vial of Viscious Mana + 1 Silk Swatch + 4 Heady Kiola + 1 Glove Pattern + 1 Greater Lightstone

5.0 Shadow Silk

With a recent patch, Verant added many new quests for class specific armor. The Necromancer's version of this armor requires three new types of silk, manufactured by silk tailors with their large sewing kit. These new types are Shadow Silk, Large Shadow Silk, and Inky Silk. Here are the fornulas to make these new materials...

Shadow Silk: Shadow Wolf Pelt, Silk Swatch, and Scroll of Gather Shadows,
Large Shadow Silk: 2 Shadow Wolf Pelts, Silk Swatch, and Scroll of Gather Shadows
Inky Silk: Shadow Wolf Pelt, Silk Swatch, and 2 Scrolls of Gather Shadows.
